Cara Wallia derelicta
の二点で、その友人が近所の村のギャラリーで開催されていた小さな展覧会を偶然訪れ、私が好きそうだ、と思って、何も知らずにカードを買って来てプレゼントしてくれたのです。私は彼の作品が大好きですから、大喜びでした。
Aberystwyth は海辺の街で、大きな大学があるので有名です。見学を申し込むのに、まず会員登録をして、、、と手間でしたが、電子メールで問い合わせをしたのに、いっこうに返事なし。電話で問い合わせると、実際に図書館で本物を見るには、その場で申し込みをしろ、との事。行ってみて果たして再びの不都合があったのですが、結果としては見れました。額に入っていました。ガラス越しで、本物の紙を直接見れず、少し残念でしたが、約１時間弱堪能できました。写真は不可。スケッチを少しとりました。
不揃いだし、斜めだし、縦棒全部歪んでるし、色んな E や G が混ざっているし、スペーシングはばらばらだし、書き直してるところはあるし。
ローマで見た、石にふぞろいに稚拙な字を刻んであった石碑類と似て、不完全だけど、魅力がある。
背景は、紙にいったん下地を塗っています。それもスムーズに、でなく、薄い所や、濃い所、色が混ぜてありますが、その混ざり具合もまちまちです。ちょうど、雑に塗った家の壁や、またそれが自然にはげていった感じです。でもこれが、ただの紙に字がそのまま書いてあるだけだったら！全く違うものになっているに違いありません。
カードで見ていた時は、Calla Wallia... の方が好きだったのですが、実物を見ると、Pwy yw'r... の方が圧倒的な迫力がありました。まさに迫ってくる感じです。大きいのにも驚いたのですが、サイズの問題だけでない、見ていると、声が聞こえてきそうな、パワーです。言語が ウェールズ語とラテン語なので、内容が分かりません。でも見ていると、字が踊り出してきそうなスピード感もあります。どきどきしました。
後に売店で、Pwy yw'r... のポスターを買いました。解説が付いていて、それによると、アングルシー地方の詩人、Gruffudd Grug の 言葉で始まり、（ウエールズ語）おミサの終わりに司祭の唱える chant （唱和) で終わるそうです。声が聞こえてきそうな理由が少し分かりました。
ここまで自由に文字を踊らせるのに、どのくらい彼の中で、言葉と、字と、デザインやレイアウトの理解と消化のプロセスがあったのかな、とまだ少しどきどきしながら、夕焼けの海岸を友人と歩きました。
I went to visit my friend on holiday and she took me to Aberystwyth, Wales to see David Jones Art works in National Library of Wales.
She saw them at a small exhibition nearby where she lives, and bought me cards without knowing I'm a big fan of his works!
Aberystwyth is the pretty seaside town with big University. It took a while to get their system to apply viewing - cut long story short, we managed to the reading room with two big frames. It was a bit of shame that I could not see them without glass between me and the actual papers but still. No photo. I did take some sketches.
I knew the lettering would be all wonky, irregular, bad spacing and so on. They always remind me those inscriptions on stones I saw lot in Rome. Another thing was the background. He painted the whole paper to make look like some sort of unfinished painted walls. It would be completely looking different if he drew these letters straight onto plain papers!
I liked Cara Wallia... when I saw these cards my friend game me but I absolutely knocked out by Pwy yw'r... It was really powerful, quite loud as well almost you can hear the singing voice. Speedy too as the letters start dancing out from the frame.
It is by Welsh and Latin so I didn't know what it is about but when I bought a poster later, there are a piece of paper saying, starting with the quote of Gruffudd Grug who was Anglesey Poet of 14c and finished with Latin chant of the priests. I know now where the voices coming from.
I was walking on beach later thinking how much process was there, in his mind, about understanding the words, the lettering, layout etc and made them to dance and sing in his own way. And we enjoyed a beautiful sunset.
